Bridger Wilderness – Popo Agie Wilderness

Monday, September 26th, 2011

There are some places that need to be seen to be believed. Last month I set out with some friends to Wyoming. Our destination was here. The Cirque of the Towers in the Popo Agie Wilderness. I knew it was going to be memorable but had no idea, really. We flew Southwest into Denver, CO. Really cheap, $186 round trip. There were five of us in our group. We rented an SUV and drove from Denver to Cheyenne via 25. Then took 80 from Cheyenne to Rock Springs. The sky was big out there. The terrain wasn’t so much flat as it was rolling. So wide open. Took 191 from Rock Springs to Farson. And then 28 to CO RD 108 (or Farson Little sandy Rd. which eventually becomes Big SandyElkhorn Rd.) This took us to Elkhorn cutoff Rd. to Lander Cutoff Rd… to Big Sandy Opening Rd. And FINALLY to the trail head! If this had been our destination. I would have been happy.

We camped at the trail head the first night. The mosquitoes were thick. They seem to knock off at sundown though. Wish the mosquitoes in Houston would do the same. Barbarians.

We started the trail around 11 a.m. 10 of us altogether. The entire hike is was beautiful. That’s a huge understatement. I just do not have the verbal skills to describe what we saw. That’s why I like photography. A great way for verbally challenged to communicate. :)

Made new friends on this trip, and strengthened old friendships. Fellowship.

The trip up, about 6 miles, was one grand view to another.

V Lake. Or  · · · –  Lake.

Most of us bought our packs, boots, & gear from REI. Being a city boy most  of my life I had never heard of this store. Wow is all I can say. We are a member now. Wasn’t born a country boy but getting there as fast as I can.

Below was our first clear view of Schiestler Peak. 11400 ft. The peak is 1600 feet from it’s base. We hope to return & climb it, and take pictures from the top.

Base camp. I believe the mountain in the background is Haystack Mountain.

This was the first leg of our journey.  Part II in a week or so. It will cover our ascent to The Cirque.

I really hope you liked the images. If so please tweet this or like my facebook page.

Before the mountains were born
or you brought forth the earth and the world,
from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

Psalm 90:2
